Luis G. Gutierrez

Inducted Class of 2000

Luis Gutierrez attended Tucson public school, from Miles Elementary through graduation at Tucson High in 1959. He was a pitcher on the Tucson High State Championship team in 1959. He attended the University of Arizona, where he played baseball, and received a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration in 1967, and a Master's Degree in 1972.

He began his career with the City of Tucson in 1968 as an administrative assistant in the Finance Department. After becoming City Manager of Tucson in 1996, Mr. Gutierrez developed the City of Tucson's Neighborhood Services Program, that ensures city services are provided with equity to all areas of Tucson so that minority, low-income neighborhoods are not excluded or neglected. He developed the Rio Nuevo Plan that will dramatically revitalize downtown Tucson. Mr. Gutierrez is involved in many community organizations including United Way of Greater Tucson, Boy Scouts of America, DM-50/Davis Monthan Community Council, and Metropolitan YMCA.

He has received many awards recognizing his service including those from the Boy Scouts, YMCA, Southern Arizona Homebuilders Association, Community Service Awards, and Outstanding Citizen Award.
