Dean Metz
Inducted Class of 1998
Dean Metz has accomplished much through his participation as an athlete, coach, official and teacher over 40-plus years. He was an outstanding baseball and basketball player for Amphitheater High School, and played basketball for the University of Arizona.
After graduating from the UA, Dean taught biology, coached basketball and baseball, and became an administrator for the Amphi School District. He was head baseball coach at Canyon Del Oro High School for many years, and still is coaching girls’ basketball at Coronado Middle School. He has had a tremendous impact on many people in Pima County.
He was a referee in football and basketball for more than 30 years and mentored Ed Hochuli, who was head referee for the 1998 Super Bowl. Dean spent many years as a referee throughout Arizona and in the Western Athletic Conference. Through retired, he continues to officiate in high school sports and coaches junior high youngsters. He has contributed to sports in Pima County as an educator, coach and an interscholastic and intercollegiate sports official. He has had a positive influence on the students and athletes he taught and coached over the years by giving of himself, in a selfless and consistent manner, his time, talent and skills.
